3 Ways to Update Your Home Without a Complete Remodel

When it comes to design, you don’t always have to start from scratch! If you’ve got good construction, appropriate flooring, and classic furniture to start with, it’s easy to rejuvenate your space without a complete overhaul. Try one of these three quick ways to update your room, or combine them all for a whole new look!

Paint

A new paint color can completely change the mood of your room. Draw your color inspiration from something you love like your favorite dishware or blouse, or a piece of decor that inspires you. Even a subtle change can make a big difference, but don’t be afraid to go outside of your comfort zone! Brighter colors will create a more dynamic tone to your room, while softer colors will enhance tranquility and peacefulness. A good way to experiment with a bolder-than-usual color is by painting an accent wall or the ceiling; if in three months you still love it, go for it and paint the whole room.

Rearrange your furniture

A little rearranging goes a long way! You can create a new focal point in your room by simply changing the direction of things (Ask yourself: is your fireplace really the star of the show, or is it time to let those floor-to-ceiling windows shine?). Keep in mind the foreground, midground, and background–using this technique will allow the eye to flow through the room to create a seamless feeling within the space. Move your large items first and use them as an anchor for the rest of the space, filling in with smaller pieces as needed. When rearranging, you might find that you have too much furniture–it’s okay to let go of something (or try it in another room!) for the sake of creating harmony in the space.

New pillows

Accent pillows are a wonderful way to enliven a space without a lot of legwork. Pick an accent color you want to work with and then mix and match pillows in complimentary colors, patterns, and textures. The more varied in design, the more eclectic the look. If you decide to stick to solid colored pillows, choose a color that stands out against the fabric they are resting on. And of course, the more pillows, the merrier–just make sure you leave room to sit!
